On 21 April 2017, ITAC initiated a duty reduction investigation on thermal transfer printing ribbons in cartridges imported under tariff subheading 9612.10. A 15% duty is currently levied on the product.
The investigation was initiated at the behest of Canon South Africa (Pty) Ltd, with the company stating that the existing duty should be removed because of the following reasons:
- There is no local manufacturer of transfer printing ribbons.
- The customs duty has unnecessary cost-raising effect on the downstream industry.
- The cost of setting up an exclusive ribbons manufacturing plant in South Africa is very high and it is unlikely that such investment will be made locally in the near future.
- The reduction of customs duty on ribbons will significantly promote the South Africa’s reliance on technology and enable it to become a competitor in the global market, in other fields of trade, industry and technology.
Interested parties have until 19 May 2017 to respond to the application.
