A provisional safeguard duty has been imposed on set screws imported under tariff subheading 7318.15.39. The safeguard duty (42.09%) came into force today, 3 August 2018. The safeguard duty is applicable to imports from all countries with the exception of developing countries specifically listed in the gazette.
The duty has been imposed following an investigation initiated by ITAC on 20 April 2018. The investigation was initiated following an application by the South African iron and Steel Institute (SAISI). This application was on behalf of the South African Fasteners Manufacturers’ Association (“SAFMA”) and its members CBC Fasteners (Pty) Ltd (“CBC”) and Transvaal Pressed Nuts Bolts and Rivets (Pty) Ltd (“TPN”).
The safeguard duty will remain in place until 18 February 2019 while ITAC continues with its investigation. Towards the above mentioned date ITAC will make a final determination on whether to retain the current provisional duty, amend it or eliminate it.
