ITAC has self-initiated a review of the general customs duties for lead-acid batteries, the kind used to start piston engines classifiable under tariff subheading 8507.10.9

The motivation provided for the review, are as follows:

  • An increase in imports and a decrease in the market share of domestic manufacturers.
  • A decline in the capacity utilisation of domestic manufacturers; and
  • A deterioration in the price competitiveness of domestic manufacturers.

This review could not have come at a more stressful time, given the recent fuel prices increases and the anti-dumping investigation on tyres. Motorists might want to start dusting off their running shoes.

Interested parties have until 15 April 2022 to respond.
